VISION 5
The Master Plan for Redevelopment at the School Campus, Remuera
The Master Plan for Redevelopment at the School Campus, Remuera is the most significant and extensive planning since the School opened in 1959. Vision 5, the Master Plan for Campus Redevelopment, addresses the Schools long-term needs and will invigorate our existing academic, cultural and sporting facilities to provide a solid blueprint for the future.
The School is widely recognised for its unwavering pursuit of high standards; offered in a caring environment, where students enjoy the challenges and aspirations of achievement. It has been the vision and investment of many individuals, throughout the Schools relatively short history, that have kept us in a pre-eminent position in the community. Whilst we can look back with pride and satisfaction at our achievements of the last 46 years, we understand that to be a truly dynamic, fresh and exciting place to learn, we must constantly re-evaluate and look to our future. We know that our future lies in ensuring that we go beyond expectations and become truly exceptional in every aspect of our delivery to students and their families. It is with this in mind that future plans have been visualised, as part of the continued growth and development of the School.
Vision 5 provides for the redevelopment of the site in five stages. The plan recognises that Saint Kentigern School has a unique setting and place in history. All development will ensure that the historical significance of Roselle House will be preserved, whilst improving the layout and functionality of the rest of the site.
The plan has been staged in manageable phases over a number of years, so that onsite building and redevelopment can take place with minimum disruption to the ongoing operation of the School. The project is to be financed by the School, the Trust Board and from philanthropic sources. The nature of a staged plan, also allows the success of fundraising efforts to be gauged, with future development advancing as the funds become available.
Phase 1: Sports Centre Development The School lacks an all weather recreational and sports area. Currently, during wet weather, pressure is put on the JC Chalmers Hall to accommodate physical education classes. The existing lower field is an ideal location for a new complex. Stabilisation of the bank is the first priority after which construction can begin on a facility that will see the inclusion of a gymnasium, teaching classrooms, a synthetic field, relocation of the existing maintenance facilities, car parking and an appropriate pedestrian and vehicle link to the rest of the campus.
Phase 2: New Middle School Years 4-6
Currently the Middle School is situated on either side of the Schools internal access road. It has long been recognised that by modern educational standards, the classrooms have become outdated. Phase 2 of the Masterplan sees a new building developed on the site currently occupied by the staffroom. This will include twelve teaching and ancillary rooms accommodated on three levels, stepping up the contour of the bank. Following construction, the current Year 4&5 building will be demolished to create a new hard play area. Completion of this phase will provide the School with additional accommodation, enabling an increase in the roll to just over 600 students. Phase 3: Specialist Block and Expressway
A new Science, Art and Technology Centre is planned for construction on the existing lower tennis court. The building will house dedicated specialist rooms in a two storey building, easing pressure on the Senior School complex where classes currently take place. Landscaping would be implemented to widen the current entrance road and create a 2-way expressway for the Junior School pickup / drop off.
Phase 4: Library, ICT, Staffroom and Performing Arts
The current Year 6 building will be demolished to make way for this new building that will house a number of facilities, including a small theatre, and eventually be linked to the JC Chalmers Hall. Priority will be given to the relocation of the library, ICT and staffroom facilities. Later development would see a linking atrium created to join the new building to the existing JC Chalmers Hall.
Phase 5: Administration / Entrance
The goal of removing visitor traffic and deliveries from the site can be implemented by repositioning the entrance and reception facilities to the site currently occupied by the library and providing limited visitor parking. The move will also address inefficiencies caused by the cramped nature of the existing administration facilities in Roselle House. The relocation will allow the creation of a larger and more practical uniform shop.
In conjunction with the development on-site, car parking, traffic management and pedestrian routes will all be evaluated, with the prime objective of improving student safety and security at all times.
Consideration has also been given to the development of a Pre-school on the site currently occupied by the Deputy Principals residence. This potential development to bring pre-schoolers into the Saint Kentigern community, would offer families a seamless educational pathway for their boys.
The major facilities included in this development plan will play a vital part in the future of Saint Kentigern School. We have been blessed with a unique environment. We are secure in the knowledge that we have built an excellent school on solid foundations. These exciting new plans continue the cycle of earlier developments and will pave the way for a truly outstanding educational facility that will keep pace with changing educational needs for future generations.
